(Washington, DC) -- The White House is calling for a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine following the downing of a Malaysian airliner with nearly 300 people on board. In a statement the White House offered "deep condolences" to all those who lost loved ones on board Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. U.S. officials say the passenger jet was shot down by a surface-to-air missile. The statement urged all parties to support an immediate ceasefire so a safe investigation of the crash site and recovery of the remains can be conducted. The White House criticized Russia for its role in the unrest in Ukraine by supporting the separatists.
