(Undated) -- First time claims for unemployment benefits are up sharply. This morning's report by the Labor Department shows 311-thousand Americans filed initial claims for jobless benefits last week. That's 21-thousand more than the revised figure for the previous week. The biggest jumps were in South Carolina, Pennslvania, Michigan, Iowa and Kansas. The steepest declines in claims were in California, Tennessee, New York, Oregon and Georgia.
