Strong Thunderstorms Targeting Mid-Atlantic, Then South Central Region
(Undated) -- Strong thunderstorms are forecast to hit the eastern parts of Virginia and the Carolinas this afternoon. Winds of more than 60 miles per hour could cause downed trees and power lines with heavy downpours creating visibility problems for drivers. People planning to be out this afternoon and evening are urged to be on the lookout for a rapid change in the weather.
Meanwhile, forecasters are warning about severe storms and possible tornadoes late on Saturday in the South Central states. The storms will target places like Dallas, Oklahoma City, Wichita, Omaha and Kansas City, Missouri. Supercell thunderstorms could create serious problems from west-central Kansas down into the Oklahoma panhandle and northwestern Texas late Saturday afternoon. Large hail is likely and the possibility of nighttime tornadoes could make for a dangerous situation. Residents are urged to review tornado safety procedures and watch for rapid changes in the weather from Saturday evening through Sunday.
