Researchers Will Build Brain Implants To Treat Veterans' Mental Conditions

(Boston, MA) -- Researchers in Boston and San Francisco will develop brain implants aimed at more accurately treating conditions in combat veterans like post-traumatic stress disorder. The 30-million dollar, five-year project is part of President Obama's BRAIN initiative announced last year. Deep brain stimulators that trigger electrical impulses to calm tremors are already used in thousands of Parkinson's disease patients. The new implants will have multiple sensors to monitor brain activity and stimulate those areas where abnormal activity is detected. This project could lead to new insights into what causes various psychiatric diseases.
