Obama To Honor Afghan War Vet For Heroism
(Washington, DC) -- President Obama will honor a Marine veteran with the Medal of Honor today. Retired Marine Corporal William "Kyle" Carpenter will be honored for conspicuous gallantry in the war in Afghanistan. Carpenter threw himself on a grenade in a battle in southern Afghanistan to save a fellow soldier. He sustained massive injuries and underwent dozens of surgeries. Carpenter becomes the eighth living recipient of the nation's highest award for valor in combat for his actions in Iraq or Afghanistan. The 24-year old Mississippi native is now a student at the University of South Carolina.
