Mixed Reaction To Supreme Court's Contraception Ruling

(Washington, DC) -- Republicans are cheering the Supreme Court's ruling on birth control while Democrats are condemning it. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said the ruling makes clear that the White House cannot trample on the religious freedoms. The high court said some private companies with religious objections do not have to provide coverage for certain types of contraceptives to employees. Michigan Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow called it a stunning decision that joins a long list of "misguided and disappointing rulings by the Court's activist conservative majority."
The 5-4 decision deals a blow to the birth control mandate in the healthcare reform law. The Hobby Lobby company sued to challenge the mandate, saying it violates religious freedom. Republican House Speaker John Boehner called it a victory for religious freedom and a defeat for a White House which "crossed constitutional lines to pursue big government objectives." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the ruling jeopardizes women's access to essential healthcare services.
