Man Charged With Murder Of Officer, Attempted Murder Of Others
(West St. Paul, MN) -- Prosecutors have charged 39-year-old Brian Fitch Senior with first-degree premeditated murder in Wednesday's shooting death of Mendota Heights Police Officer Scott Patrick. Fitch has also been charged with attempted first-degree murder for allegedly firing at officers just before he was arrested Wednesday night in Saint Paul. Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom says at Regions Hospital Fitch told an officer who was guarding him, quote, "Just to let you know, I hate cops and I'm guilty." Backstrom says prosecutors will take the unusual step of convening a multi-county grand jury in Dakota and Ramsey counties to bring first-degree murder charges against Fitch. Backstrom says it's in the interest of justice and efficiency, but more importantly in the best interest of the victims. Funeral services for Officer Patrick are set for Wednesday morning at Saint Stephens Lutheran Church in West Saint Paul.
