(Geneva, Switzerland) -- Direct talks between the U.S., Russia, the Europe Union and Ukraine are underway in Switzerland. Today's meeting in Geneva marks the first time that foreign ministers from Russia and Ukraine have talked directly since the crisis over Crimea began. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met privately for about 40 minutes this morning to talk about the situation in Ukraine before the larger meeting began. The meeting comes as pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine demand they be allowed to form a republic and join Crimea in the Russian Federation.
