FCC Scraps Plans For Controversial Media Study

(Undated) -- The Federal Communications Commission is backing off plans to launch a study that raised concerns about limiting freedom of the press. The now-nixed study would have been an attempt to "identify and understand the critical information needs of the American public, with special emphasis on vulnerable-disadvantaged populations." However, after receiving a flood of complaints, the FCC on Friday announced it would be shelving the proposed study. FCC commissioner Ajit Pai welcomed the move, saying the study would have "thrust the federal government into newsrooms across the country." And that, Pai said, is "somewhere it just doesn't belong."
