Defense Secy To Testify About Bergdahl Swap Tomorrow
(Arlington, VA) -- Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel testifies about the Bowe Bergdahl prisoner swap tomorrow. Pentagon spokesman, Admiral John Kirby, said Hagel will direct and forthcoming in a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee. Many lawmakers are fuming about the trade of Army Sergeant Bergdahl for five Taliban commanders. In a Pentagon briefing, Kirby also flatly denied speculation that there was any sort of ransom deal for Bergdahl.
Kirby said the Pentagon will fully investigate allegations that Bergdahl deserted his post five years ago and was captured by the Taliban. Kirby cautioned against a rush to judgment and noted that, at this time, Bergdahl has not been declared a deserter. Bergdahl was recently released by the Taliban after five years in captivity. The Taliban commanders had been held in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay.
In earlier remarks, GOP House Speaker John Boehner said the release of the Taliban leaders will put American lives at risk. Admiral Kirby said there is no doubt that the released Taliban commanders are dangerous but indicated the U.S. trusts Qatar to keep them under control for the next year. Under terms of the prisoner swap, Qatar agreed to keep the Taliban leaders for a year.
