Bob Costas To Sit Out Olympic Coverage Due To Eye Infection

(Sochi, Russia) -- Bob Costas' noticeable eye infection is forcing the veteran sportscaster to take a time out in his coverage of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Speaking via phone on the "Today" show Tuesday, Costas announced he would be sitting out of tonight's primetime telecast of the games, leaving NBC colleague Matt Lauer to pinch-hit for him in his absence. It will mark the first time since 1988 that Costas has had to bow out of hosting NBC's Olympic coverage in primetime.
Costas, who has been seen battling red, puffy eyes since the games began last week, shared in his phone call Tuesday that his condition had worsened.
