Boehner Says U.S. Should Not Get Close To Debt Default

(Washington, DC) -- House Speaker John Boehner is calling on lawmakers to avoid a major fight over raising the debt ceiling. The Ohio Republican told a news conference today that the U.S. should not default on its debt or even come close to it. The Treasury Department's ability to borrow more money is set to expire on February 7th without an increase in the 17-trillion-dollar limit. Boehner did not say if Republicans would link demands for deficit reduction to a bill raising the debt ceiling.
