(Park Ridge, IL) -- A hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois is at the center of a disturbing outbreak of what's being called a "nightmare bacteria." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the superbug has infected 44 people there in the past year. The antibiotic-resistant bacteria known as CRE can typically kill up to half of those who become seriously infected, though none of the Illinois patients have died. It lives in the intestines and infects the bladder or lungs, causing coughing, fever and chills. The hospital in question has upgraded its sterilization procedures in light of the outbreak.
