North Korea Releases Detained U.S. Citizen

(Pyongyang) -- The State Department is confirming that an American war veteran detained in North Korea for over a month has been released and is now in Beijing. The official North Korean state news agency said the government had deported 85-year-old Merrill Newman. A week ago, North Korea charged the California man with committing "hostile acts" against the state. A video was released of Newman admitting the killing of army personnel and civilians and apologizing for his actions. Newman was visiting the north as a tourist when authorities took him off a flight on October 26th that was set to leave the country.
