(Washington, DC) -- House Republican leaders are moving toward new legislation aimed at ending the government shutdown and averting a debt crisis.
After a closed-door meeting, GOP House Speaker John Boehner said talks are continuing "on a way forward." He said the "idea of default is wrong. The emerging House bill is slightly different from legislation that Senate leaders are trying to finalize. The partial shutdown of the federal government is in its third week and the threat of a default looms Thursday without a deal to raise the debt ceiling. The Senate and House bills would both extend government funding until mid January and increase the debt ceiling until early February.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor says it's time for both sides to come together.
