(Vidor, TX) -- A South Texas five-year-old is dead after shooting himself with his babysitter's gun while she napped.
Orange County Sheriff Chief Deputy Clint Hodgkinson says John Read got a hold of the 40-caliber pistol on Monday because it was lying on a living room coffee table inside his home. Investigators believe the babysitter, Melissa Ringhardt, got the gun out because she was afraid of being home alone. The 19-year-old is charged with abandoning or endangering a child with bond set at 250-thousand dollars. A six-month-old was also inside the home at the time, but was uninjured.
Orange County Sheriff Chief Deputy Clint Hodgkinson says the gun was originally stored in a gun safe, but Melissa Ringhardt got it out.
Hodgkinson says Ringhardt has to face the consequences for what she did.
Hodgkinson says people get the chance to consider gun safety after the shooting.
