Mexico asks Nicaragua extradite fake journalists

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexican prosecutors say they will ask Nicaragua to extradite 16 of the 18 Mexicans who allegedly posed as journalists to smuggle $9.2 million in cash into Nicaragua.

The Attorney General's Office says Mexico wants to try the 16 on money laundering charges. They face trial on similar counts in Nicaragua.

The case has made headline because the suspects used vans with logotypes like those used by Mexican television network Televisa. They were caught after entering Nicaragua in August.

Televisa has said that the six vans were illegally registered in the company's name using false documents and that none of the suspects worked for the company.

The 18 Mexicans were allegedly carrying money from Mexican drug traffickers through Central America to pay for a drug shipment.
