Congo says agreement not likely with rebel group

GOMA, Congo (AP) - The spokesman for Congo's government says it will likely not sign a peace agreement with the M23 rebel group by a deadline agreed upon by the two sides.

Lambert Mende said Monday there is no telling whether an accord would be signed by Friday - the March 15 deadline - because the government no longer has a clear counterpart after M23 split into two factions.

The M23 rebels overran the city of Goma last November. Two weeks ago, the group splintered following a leadership dispute. The factions have been fighting each other ever since.

Fighters from both sides said that they fought early Monday in the Rumangabo area, north of the provincial capital Goma.
