Kenyatta passes 50 pct mark in presidential count
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Kenya saw a photo finish in its race for president Friday as the last ballots were counted. Uhuru Kenyatta, the leading candidate, saw his percentage edge above 50 percent.
Officials told The Associated Press they believed Kenyatta will win.
The latest vote tally by the election commission showed Kenyatta with 50.5 percent of the vote.
An electoral expert, Tom Wolf, said outstanding votes coming from Kenya's Rift Valley are an "abundant vote basket" for Kenyatta.
Kenya voted Monday for president, the country's first election since its 2007 vote sparked tribe-on-tribe violence that killed more than 1,000 people.
A Kenyatta win could have far-reaching consequences with Western relations. The son of Kenya's founding father, Kenyatta faces charges at the International Criminal Court for his role in the 2007 postelection violence.
