Workers strike at Oakland, Calif., airport

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Union workers have begun the first part of a 24-hour strike at Oakland International Airport and at the Port of Oakland.

A spokeswoman for the Service Employees International Union says maintenance and janitorial workers represented by the union walked off their jobs at Oakland International Airport at 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Spokeswoman Anna Bakalis says striking workers were picketing outside both terminals at the airport late Monday, but were not attempting to disrupt air travel.

Bakalis says that in the second part of the strike, about 500 union workers will picket outside the port beginning at 6 a.m. Tuesday. They're hoping other port workers will refuse to cross the picket line.

Port officials have expressed concerns the strike could cause disruptions to harbor operations.
